🩺 Meet the Doctor: Dr. Rebecca Schwartz
May 19, 2025 · Meet the Team

We’re thrilled to welcome Dr. Rebecca Schwartz to the Boston West Veterinary Emergency & Specialty team!
With a thoughtful, patient-centered approach and a genuine passion for both animals and people, Dr. Schwartz brings curiosity, compassion, and a drive to keep learning to our Emergency Department. We sat down with her for a quick Q&A to learn more about her journey and what excites her about veterinary medicine.
What inspired you to become a veterinarian?
While studying animal behavior in college, I had the opportunity to do summer research with service dogs. I quickly realized that while research wasn’t my path, I loved working with animals—and people. Veterinary medicine checked every box: it’s intellectually challenging, emotionally rewarding, and full of opportunities to make a difference.
Where did you complete your veterinary training?
I earned my DVM from Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine and completed a 9-month Emergency & Critical Care training program (EVET) at Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital.
What are your areas of special interest within veterinary medicine?
As someone early in my career, I’m still exploring! What I love most about emergency medicine is the variety, it offers constant learning and problem-solving opportunities every single day.
What’s one thing you love about working with pets and their families?
I really enjoy hearing pet owners describe their animals' quirks, it’s such a sweet way to learn what makes every pet unique and loved.
What do you enjoy most about being part of the Boston West team so far?
The positivity and support are unmatched. There’s strong collaboration across departments, and everyone genuinely cares about our patients and their families. It’s a great environment to grow and thrive.
How do you approach caring for anxious or nervous pets?
I’m a strong believer in pre-medicating nervous pets whenever appropriate, it helps create a smoother and less stressful experience. I also collaborate closely with pet owners, who often know exactly what comforts their pet. Every case is unique, and it’s important to approach it that way.
What advice would you give to help keep pets healthy year-round?
Regular visits with your primary care vet are so important. Preventative care and early disease detection can significantly improve outcomes. And having a solid relationship with your general practitioner makes long-term care easier and more effective.
What do you enjoy outside of veterinary medicine?
I love getting outdoors, hiking, running, bouldering, and I’m always up for traveling somewhere new!
What excites you most about your veterinary career right now?
I’m excited to continue growing my skills and gaining hands-on experience, especially in emergency surgery, which is next on the horizon for me!
We’re so excited to have Dr. Schwartz as part of our growing Boston West team. Her curiosity, clinical dedication, and collaborative spirit make her an incredible asset to our hospital and the families we serve.
