Team Spotlight: Dr. Sean Aiken, Veterinary Surgeon at Boston West
June 2, 2025 · Meet the Team

If you’ve worked with our Surgery Service at Boston West Veterinary Emergency & Specialty, you’ve likely crossed paths with Dr. Sean Aiken, a highly skilled and deeply dedicated veterinary surgeon who’s been part of our team for years. Known for his calm approach, technical expertise, and collaborative spirit, Dr. Aiken is a cornerstone of our hospital community.
We sat down with Dr. Aiken to reflect on his path in veterinary medicine, his clinical passions, and what drives him every day.
Q: What first inspired you to pursue a career in veterinary medicine? Growing up in Southern California, I was surrounded by animals, donkeys, chickens, ducks, and an animal-loving neighbor named Ann Mills. She always wanted to be a veterinarian, and I think she may have "brainwashed" me early on! I honestly can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be a veterinarian, it was just what I was going to do.
Q: Where did your veterinary journey take you? I earned my DVM from UC Davis, then completed a rotating internship and residency in Small Animal Surgery at Purdue University. I also received a Master’s in Biomedical Engineering from Purdue, with a focus on surgical innovation.
Q: What are your special areas of clinical interest? I’m especially interested in orthopedic surgery, including total hip replacement, arthroscopy, and minimally invasive fracture repair. I enjoy solving complex surgical challenges and restoring mobility for my patients.
Q: What do you love most about working with pets and their families? There’s nothing more rewarding than helping a pet return to full function. Watching a patient regain their ability to move freely, and seeing the joy it brings their family, never gets old.
Q: What’s something that stands out to you about working at Boston West? The people. Our team shares a common goal of delivering the best possible care, and everyone is genuinely committed to learning and growing. It’s a collaborative environment where we challenge and support each other in equal measure.
Q: Tell us about your own pets! I have two doodles who are, without a doubt, the best around. And to be clear, they’re not pets, they’re people. Just a little hairier than most.
Q: How do you approach nervous or anxious patients? I always start by talking to the owners and observing the pet quietly. Giving them time to get used to my presence and voice helps lower their stress. I don’t rush, patience goes a long way, especially with anxious animals.
Q: While you don’t practice primary care, what advice do you have for managing chronic conditions like arthritis? Arthritis pain management is a big part of what I discuss with clients. Early intervention, weight management, and a long-term strategy for mobility can make a huge difference in quality of life.
Q: What do you enjoy outside the hospital? I’m a big fan of paddling outrigger canoes, woodworking, and wood turning. Snowboarding is another favorite, and I have a pretty serious weakness for jellybeans.
Q: What excites you most about your work today? Mentorship. I’m passionate about sharing what I’ve learned with younger surgeons. Watching them grow, master new techniques, and become confident in their own abilities is incredibly fulfilling. It’s how we expand our collective impact and help even more patients and families.
Dr. Aiken’s dedication to surgical excellence, patient care, and mentorship helps make Boston West what it is today. We’re lucky to have him—and so are the pets (and people) he cares for.
